MARKET GLORY TUTORIAL
Many people now play a few online games regularly, perhaps for just 20 minutes of an evening or on a lunchbreak, while most game developers use lots of tactics to eek money out of their player base, a growing number are finally realising it's a lot more interesting for players to be able to earn money, not just spend it...
One of the first of the "batch" of games is, MarketGlory, from Romania developers, a fairly interesting business management sim.
The following is a guide designed for veterans and new players alike, so obviously step one is you'll need an account if you haven't already joined, the site can be found here (if you hold CTRL whilst clicking on the link you can open in a new tab and continue reading). If you join through the link you'll be assigned to me so feel free to message me in-game and ask any questions you're not clear about.
Player Numbers
~ Romania had been 1st for over a year then Indonesia just exploded, plus USA now beginning to catch them ~
Player Numbers few months later
I - Working
When first starting out one of the primary sources of income is working in other player's companies, max, once per day. You start with only a little experience and therefore productivity, meaning at first it's hard to get much wages, however your experience increases each time you work.
So when you first start working you might not even be making a few cents, yet later be making a couple of euros a day.
There's also the potential to gain a large bonus (so long as your government has the funds) on top of the basic wage for working three days in a row. This is known as the Work Bonus. With this bonus it means sometimes it's profitable to buy newspapers / milk before pressing [work] on the 3rd day (as energy also increases your productivity).
So for example in a country with few residents, say Lithuania, it'd be wise to buy newspapers and some milk on the 3rd day to get a large work bonus on top of the basic wage.
Yet if Lithuania's country was bankrupt and not paying out bonuses it'd be better not to, while if you were in a country with very high wages, Indonesia for example then it might be wise to buy newspapers and milk everyday.
II - Shares
The shares available currently issue a dividend about 3 times a month (though that is varying) giving them a potentially very healthy rate of return, the rate used to be much slower, more like once in 6 months, have seen the price also increase sharply, when i joined shares were 17 cents a pop, now more like 75 cents.
Also the sale price often fluctuates wildly as the dividend payment time nears, also when changes are made in the game, so one can potentially often make a few euros with simply buying low and selling high as the price fluctuates.
Data collected so far
- Shares have paid 0.01 euro per share on :
* 31/1/14 - Share Price : €1.09
* 22/1/14 - Share Price : 0.90e
* 7/1/14 - Share Price : 0.81e
* 25/12/13 - Share Price : 0.77e (GoalTycoon launched this month, tens of thousands of euros poured into MG and GT hence the late / slow div payment rate all of sudden plus the wait from the double payment on the 26th which meant twice as much a wait)
* 26/11/13 - Share Price : 0.78e (seems to have been a glitch and the dividend paid twice)
* 15/11/13 - Share Price : 0.77e
* 4/11/13 - Share Price : 0.78e
* 27/10/13 - Share Price : 0.75e
* 14/10/13
* 1/10/13
* 19/9/13
* 4/9/13
* 16/8/13
* 05/8/13 (oddity? Run on shares / investing at the moment, large flood of cash)
* 26/7/13
* 29/6/13
* 21/2/13
* 30/11/12
- Un-tracked before this time
III - Free Companies
As a new player you are granted free licenses for a newspaper and a milk farm, both can turn a small profit (the newspaper over a much longer timescale) and also offer an opportunity to learn how companies / businesses work.
With both the free companies however I'd recommend waiting until you have a little spare cash to seed them with, for initial wages and the in the case of the newspaper, paper stock, say a couple of chunks of gold.
Some would recommend placing your milk farm in a foreign country if wages are high in your own country, though remember to check how much tax they charge on sales of milk on the international market (I usually do this by messaging a member of the government).
The thing to remember with newspapers is that each article is like a product on a shelf, so even if sales are slow going at first though each one released continues to sell, so even if only like 10 or so sales on the day of release then could be 50 or so in a few months, many more if fill the articles with actually readable interesting stuff (so get lots of votes).
Remember, a citizen will at times want 10 articles a day, so if there's less than 10 articles on sale in your country, it has room for another newspaper definitely.
IV - Companies
If you consider opening or buying a company bear in mind that your profitability will depend heavily upon your competition (globally and in your home market) so research the market well, the supply chain, how wages are looking, potentially make a graph , licenses have a recurring cost so remember to factor this in, if there's a huge profit margin someone will have usually already opened a company if your country is well developed, so it's usually hard to find a niche to sell in with profit without having to invest heavily and upgrade company highly to make it profitable to manufacture the goods comparatively globally.
Also remember to check the Tax rate / sales tax for international selling and factor that into your profit calculations, most countries will have it set to minimum however this can still be a noticeable whack to profits.
Companies I'd recommend in order :
Coffee Plantation - If the country you're in has low wages (and coffee beans have minimum international sales tax). Even if you're in a small country, coffee sells for a very healthy profit margin on the international market and is a good reliable starting basis for a miniature empire, plus a lvl 1 or 2 upgrade boosts an already very healthy profit margin.
Winery - Unless there's already 3 or so wine producers in your country I'd recommend a winery as soon as possible, you'll need to invest heavily at first before you start seeing your barrels age and sales begin, however the returns can often be huge and there's always a demand for wine.
Milk Factory - Again, like the coffee plantation, only if the wages are relatively low in your country, as so many new players start milk farms and sell the milk at a loss you can usually often pick up a bargain and then process the milk into profit with a milk market that will always have strong demand from the coffee/milk shops.
V - Fighting
The amount you gain for fighting your ten fights each day is set by your countries bonus, at first this can be higher than your wage.
Usually only the trainer is available to fight however at around a little after 23:00 server time un-blocked refferals become available to fight, most are usually of little to no value however there might be the odd gem or two.
In the first few weeks of play, fighting is important as a source of extra cash, I used to buy milk & papers, press work and then burn off the remaining energy with fights. After the first few weeks though a player should really consider arena fighting and stop using fights altogether.
VI - Referral Auction
Continuing on from fighting, not only can you sell referrals you gain from fighting free agents in the fight pool, you can also buy and sell ones from the auction, this will obviously take a fair amount of time for you to be able to get your eye in and be able to see good deals and not so good deals, plus have a nice pot of gold and euros to play with.
Not only can you make profit buying and selling, you can keep the good ones & form + maintain your own team.
- A recent change means if you have 1-5 active referrals you gain more experience when working, quite a lot more infact, so would recommend at least five referrals being bought off the auctions, meaning even if they don't quite cover the renewal block cost they do through a healthy experience bonus to you.
VII - Resellers
Resellers are very new to MG, the idea at present seems to be simply for a way for people to buy in-game cash from other users using different payment systems than paypal, including direct bank transfers.
VIII - Running the Country
In my time in government we didn't get paid, one of the more recent changes has been to begin offering ministers a wage, this is based upon your country's income though, so will vary from territory to territory.
Along with this change it also was required that to run for office you'd have to have at least 25 energy, so if you're not running naturally around this level of energy the cost will have to be factored in, also in quite populace countries it might be a case of most candidates voting for themselves and not many other people voting (as need 5 energy to do so) so will be pot luck who gets a seat.
Not really recommended then unless you have the energy naturally anyway or lots of friends in the country with no governing aspirations of their own
IX - Wars & Medals
A lot of how profitable wars and medals will be for you will depend upon if you're fighting in the arena, clearly if you have enough energy and def / attack then getting that first defensive hit in is crucial for the bonus points for the medal, a global medal fund pays out to medal holders.
X - Arena Fighting
Arena fighting is a lot about weighing up potential costs and rewards, if you can find a good cheap source of equipment and energy then it might be a very profitable venture.
Usually a player will go through three stages of dev, the first month or so they will work and [fight] using energy to increase those revenues. After that they will have cash to look at starting their free companies and arena fighting. Then after a long while they'll have so much experience and productivity plus own team of refferals that energy becomes more valuable to have than to lose it in arena fighting.
The fights get reset daily, the general advice being hit a player as high up (points-giving-wise) that you can.
So for example you could have a very new player who buys a low quality knife and low quality glasses who just fights a few fights every reset who will make 10, 20 cents a day, then a week later they could be using high quality and fighting 10 or so fights a reset making 50 cents a day or so.
Good luck in your journey!
